My work to be shown in AIGA Toledo's newest gallery exhibit, Sit&Tell, Tomorrow!

I was accepted to take part in AIGA Toledo's newest gallery exhibit, Sit&Tell, back in March and the work is going on display at my alma mater, Bowling Green State University in the Wolfe Center for the Arts lobby!

Exciting news and here is another sneak peek of my piece that was accepted. The cool thing is, the entries were designed specifically for, and will be, displayed on actual chairs! The exhibit opens tomorrow, Tuesday the 14th at 7 p.m EST! If you're in that neck of the woods, go check it out.

You can follow the Instagram account as they introduce different chairs each day, starting tomorrow, and the show will continue on a rolling exhibition through the Greater Toledo area at the locations listed on the Sit&Tell website and shown below. Follow the news on Facebook as well.

I am officially going to college...AGAIN!

Alex Beat here. Wanted to put a few updates out there since my last posting about this month's upcoming art exhibit I am taking part in with AIGA Toledo. See the post here

I am going back to college, AGAIN! I was recently accepted through audition to attend the two year Associates Brass and Woodwinds program at Los Angeles College of Music here in Los Angeles and could not be more excited. I set out to get accepted at this school almost 2 years ago when I was overseas in Australia. Now here I am today, happy to announce I'll be starting this Fall 2016 and through the help of all my past saxophone instructors who inspired me to set my sights high.

All of the fine print paperwork is done, so all that's left now is to gather up my school supplies and books and head into class this October! Now, with all things in life, you're going to get counter arguments or people with different viewpoints. I've recently had some people question my motives for attending a school to learn music. Why would I pay money to go to this private college when I can simply play music in my room by myself for the next ten years, grinding away in hopes I'll somehow get noticed in this massive sea of Angelinos? They may have a few somewhat valid points like yes, I could save money, or time and effort, but they're being too simple. There's more to this than just going to a school to learn a few notes. Yes I can do that in my own time, and I have. This school isn't about going to learn music like in grade school. I've already done that too. This school is about making it in the industry and about making a name for yourself. If I'm going to learn from some of the best in the industry here in one of the meccas for music then yes I'll pay so I'm not scraping by, reinventing the wheel, trying to catch a gig for the next ten years. Consider it a springboard if you will. It's all about networking and this industry-oriented school HAS it!

Oh yes, and some new self portrait studies full of disheveled, blank stares into space for your art viewing pleasure you good-looking, selfie-taking, narcissistically lovable a$$holes (said in the most endearing way possible).

Artist Taryn Schlebusch overcomes loss, depression and hardship to give life new meaning in the newest book from True North House Publishing.

Guys and girls, it has been some time, and by some I meant a lot of time, since we had any new updates come out. I'd like to briefly take a moment of your time to point out one of the newest projects to date, that has been in progress for the past year now, since I was in Australia. In doing so, I would also like to highlight the fact that this project gave me the opportunity to work with an awesome group of women, for the second time around. But different to last time, our newest member

Team True North House's newest book was released on August 11th, in memory of one of the greats, Robin Williams. This book release is in respect to him and everyone else out there in the world who is or has at one point in their life, struggled with some form of self-doubt, emotional and mental struggle, depression, and hard times in life. We've all come across these moments, but it's important to know how to reach out and help each other. Let's not forget that. This book is a story, told through original poetry, of one woman's battle with these relative ideas and how she has overcome struggle and loss, to arrive at acceptance and find new meaning in what was such a dark time in life. I've had the wonderful opportunity to work with her, Taryn Schlebusch, ever since our initial interview, done online, connecting us from Australia to South Africa. Her stories have given me new strength and meaning to the ideas of life and living.

Thank you Taryn.

The book is published online through and will soon be available at Barnes and Noble as well. Click the image to view it at Lulu.

Gold Coast, QLD.

Update for everyone. Well, a bit of a major one in terms of careers. I am soon going to be leaving Gold Coast, the place I have come to call home for the past 7 months. It's been hectic, fast-paced, arduous and beyond exhilarating. Everyday was different and new here, though at times work could be a bit of a burnout. Hospitality work always is. But I have kept up some design work and will be releasing a new book soon with the help of my fellow collaborators in True North House Publishing.

Alexander Johnny Beat, the brand, is going to be taking a drastic turn in career change as I set down photography and art, not completely, but in priority. I am shifting gears into my true passion, which has always been since first picking it up seriously at age 12, music.

I am heading out from my Queensland home here to travel for a while longer over in New Zealand. It's going to be an insane trip, full of surfing some of the finest swell south of the hemisphere, exploring volcanoes, sifting through natural hot springs, skydiving over glaciers, visiting long lost relatives and driving a campervan/freedom camping throughout the whole journey. I hope you'll get to see some of the journey and experience with me through the photos and video to come.

I'll see you in the U.S.A.
In the meantime, a few photos as a sort of salute to this gorgeous land.

NEW PHOTOS!! Order one today. Now. Do it.

Happy to announce some new photos on the website. Here's a glance at them or you can see them in all of their glory on the home page. I have been excited to post these as part of my photography book I came out to Oz work on. The thing is, the book is going to be taking less of a priority on my list as new goals have come into fruition lately. More news of that to come soon. But don't worry, photography will still be a major portion of my work as always.

In the meantime, enjoy these photos, which are going to be included in the Postcard Project as well, so if you'd like to receive a print and letter, order one up.

Go do something for yourself today.

New biz cards have arrived. Get one with your postcard project package.

New business cards with the Beat name all over them. That's alllll that matters of course. For all you U.S. folk, the cards have my Oz number on them, but no worries you can figure out another way to contact me if you don't want to get international charges. It's the 21st century.

These will be getting sent out with some of the awesome prints you see above as well, as part of my Postcard Project packages. You can pick up one of the packages here

Hope y'all are excited to get some hand-written letters. I've already written a couple and will be sending them out this week. Cheers everyone and hope you have an excellent holiday season. New video of the new apartment and such coming soon.
